Hello there!

I'm Charlotte

I'm a vocal coach, musical director, piano and flute teacher specialising in musical theatre and contemporary pop vocal coaching.

I've had the absolute pleasure of guiding hundreds of students on their musical journeys and I'm pretty sure I have the best job in the world :)

About Me...

Music has been my passion and purpose for as long as I can remember. I spent hours teaching myself to play the recorder and singing in my childhood bedroom (sorry, parents!), I studied flute and piano as a teenager and went on to achieve a first-class BA (Hons) Music degree from the University of Nottingham. This was followed swiftly by a further MA Music degree, during which time I also started conducting and teaching, and my passion for musical theatre and singing really came to the forefront both in my academic studies and the work I started as a musical director in community theatre.

Since then, vocal coaching has become a specialism for me. I've put hours of work and study into my own professional development in this area; I have completed numerous courses including Estill Voice Training Levels 1&2, joined the BVA (British Voice Association) and AOTOS (Association of Teachers of Singing), attended numerous conferences and development sessions, and most recently commenced work on becoming a certified Vocal Health First Aider. I've been able to pass this knowledge on to my amazing students who have gone from strength to strength gaining incredible exam results, opportunities and their dream places at top drama schools like Urdang Academy, GSA and LIPA. I’ve also had the chance to be musical director for some incredible, award-winning community and youth musicals, and have recently started a new venture opening VoxFresh Derby, a contemporary singing group for young people!

Vocal Coaching...

I teach musical theatre and pop style vocals from beginner to advanced (diploma) levels. I can help you with...

  • Discovering your voice: finding your sound in super quick time if you need to prep for a vocal audition and singing is not "your thing" (I'm looking at you, dancers and actors!)

  • Vocal Technique: accessing parts of your voice or vocal qualities that you've not achieved before, and using them safely. For example, extending your high or lower range, accessing your "belt" or perfecting your vocal riffs.

  • Rep Coaching: finding the right audition or performance song for you, or creating the perfect rep folder. This might also include preparing different length cuts of your songs and sheet music/tracks to match.

  • Audition Preparation: perfecting your performance and setting yourself up for success at your audition whether that's for drama school, amateur or professional opportunities.

  • Performance Skills: adding musicality, expression and authenticity to your performance, perfecting your acting through song and finding that connection with the music that takes your performance to the next level.

  • Exam Preparation: achieving success in a range of vocal exams and diplomas including LCM, Rockschool, and ABRSM exam boards.

  • Finding the enjoyment: allowing yourself time to enjoy your singing and reaping the benefits to your mental health and confidence.

Instrumental Tuition..

I teach classical piano and flute from beginner to advanced (Grade 8) levels.

In your lessons I can help you with...

  • Learning music notation and theory

  • Instrument-specific technique and interpretation

  • Performance skills

  • Exam preparation (ABRSM, LCM or MTB syllabus)

  • Performance preparation e.g. GCSE/A Level performance, festivals etc.

  • Instrument maintenance and advice on buying/upgrading appropriate instruments for your standard for all budgets

Music theory is generally taught alongside practical work in these lessons, although I recommend that students take some additional, specific theory tuition once they reach grade 4-5 level if they are needing to take the ABRSM theory exam.

Musical Direction & Community Projects...

I have been working as a musical director around the East Midlands region for around a decade now, with local companies such as Derby Youth Musical Theatre, Cabaret Theatre Company, LEOS Musical Theatre Company, Lichfield Garrick Theatre, and many more! Shows have included award-winning productions of "Legally Blonde" at Derby Theatre, "Jesus Christ Superstar" at Mansfield Palace Theatre, and "Phantom of the Opera" at Guildhall Theatre, Derby.

I also run a contemporary, pop-based singing group for young people aged 4-18, VoxFresh Derby. This group gives young singers the chance to achieve their potential through their music whilst having loads of fun with like-minded kids! VoxFresh Derby sessions take place on Fridays at Darley Abbey Village Hall - free trials can be booked here.

Don't just take my word for it...

A few of my students had some things to say about what they gained from my coaching too!

"Charlotte is an amazing teacher, she is able to correct me without making me feel silly, she's encouraging and honestly she has the patience of a Saint! There is absolutely no judgement from Charlotte, she is 100% there to help. Charlotte is able to quickly pinpoint problems and solve them, and her support is strongly felt and appreciated. You can feel she is genuinely rooting for you, and wants to help you; a real passion for teaching."

"Having never considered myself to be a singer, I came to Charlotte hoping to improve and find myself within this discipline. I cannot express the impact her lessons have had on me technically speaking and confidence wise; I no longer recognise the person who first walked through her door. Every lesson is always tailored to suit me and she has a clever way of explaining everything clearly, something I found so useful having had little experience in singing. Charlotte helped me to achieve my dream of getting into drama school and for that I will be forever grateful."

"When I first came to Charlotte I had lost a lot of my vocal range and general confidence in performing for others. She has helped me to become better than I ever was and to really look deeper into my technique and the storytelling side of the songs I sing. She will push you BUT she will care for and support you in anyway she can!"
